Three young musicians have won the honor of performing at the annual Children's Concert of the Ann Arbor Symphony on Feb. 11. George Marsh, Peggy Howe and Maija Numminen were selected from among 13 area musicians at Saturday's auditions at the University School of Music. Marsh, 13, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Marsh, of 5405 Warren, has been playing the violin since the age of seven. He began composing for strings when he was eight and has had several chamber works performed in public, including a composition for small orchestra written when he was a sixth grader at the University School. He has been a member of the Student Symphony Orchestra in Chautauqua, N.Y., for the past three summers, attended Galamian Music School in Meadowmont, N.Y., last summer and played before the New England Music Camp in Waterville, Me. He is presently concert master of the Forsythe Junior High Concert Orchestra and studies with Michael Avsharian. Miss Howe, 17, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Marvin C. Howe, of 6 Bristol Court, has studied cello for about five years. She has attended the National Music Camp at Interlochen for four seasons. This past summer she won two awards there: the Sigma Alpha Iota scholarship to the camp for next summer and the Joseph E. Maddy Scholarship to the Eastman School of Music. Miss Howe is, a mor at Ann Arbor High School. She studies under the instruction of Douglas Marsh. Miss Numminen, 17, a native of Tampere, Finland, lives at the home of Dr. Eugene Toth, of 3405 Craig Rd. He is assistant dean of the School of Music. She won a Sibelius Scholarship in Finland which made it possible for her to come to Ann Arbor in the Youth for Understanding Program. She has studied piano for eight years. She has attended music camps in Sweden and Finland during the summers and has appeared several times as soloist. Miss Numminen is a junior at Ann Arbor High. She studies with Robert Hord of the U-M School of Music. Judging the auditions Saturday were Emil Holz, Ann bor Symphony conductor, and Rogert Jacobi, Elizabeth Green and Janice Clark from the School of Music. Others who auditioned were Betty Jane Brown and Doug Rutherford - violins, Cari Van Valkenburg - viola, Sandra Bergman - doublé bass, Anita Kalousdian and Mary Etta Palmer - voice, Jay de Vries- clarinet, David Snyder - bassoon, and Louis Stout, Jr. - French horn. The Children's Concert is jointly sponsored by the Ann Arbor Recreation Department and the Ann Arbor Public Schools.
