Teacher Critical Following Pileup

A junior high school teacher was critically injured this morning when his car slid off a snow-covered Scio Township froad and hit a tree, trapping him inside. That accident was one of more than 30 I which occurred throughout Washtenaw i County this morning as periodic snow I showers made roads throughout the area hazardous. Edwin M. Aprill Jr., about 41, of 5272 W. Liberty Rd., Scio Township, a teacher at Slauson Junior High School, was headed east on W. Liberty Rd. near the :, Saginpw Forest and west of S. Wagner Rd. when the accident happened, sheriiff's men said. Officers said Aprill apparently lost i control of his vehicle on snowy pavement as the car entered a curve in the 1 road. The vehicle careened off the high way, went into a ditch and then crashed I into a tree. Ann Arbor Fire Department I Rescue Squad members who were called I to the scène said Aprill was trapped in I his car by the roof which was pushed i down on him and the dashboard shoved i backward toward him. Fire Rescue men worked for more I than an hour before they were able to I free Aprill by cutting away the roof of I the demolished car. The teacher was 1 reported in critical condition late this Ét morning at U-M Hospital. In another accident this morning, a m - - . 19-yeav-old Ann Arbor resident was taken to University Hospital with shoulder injuries received when his compact car went out of control on the N. Main St. bridge at the M-14 Bypass and rolled over. Sheriff's Sgt. Ronald Ritter said the car diiven by James P. Hendrickson of 1708 Morton Ave. bounced off the bridge railing after going into a skid on snowcovered pavement. The 1970-model car then rolled over. The vehicle was extensively damaged, Sgt. Ritter said. In two traffic accidents yesterday a total of five persons were hurt, sheriff's deputies reported. Four of the injured were hurt when cars driven by Lawrence D. Trammell, 24, and Mrs. Dorothy M. Domas, 53, collided on Willow Rd. near Whittaker Rd. in Augusta Township. Deputies said both drivers are from the Milan area. Officers said Mrs. Domas's visión was obscured by a passing school bus at the intersection. Mrs. Domas, Trammell and two passengers in the Domas car, Debra L. Domas, 13, and four-month-old Carrie E. Smith of Milan, were taken to Beyer Memorial Hospital in Ypsilanti. Kathy L. Gardner, 19, of 1031 Western Dr., was taken to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital after her car went out of control on a curve on Geddes Rd. near Superior Rd. in Superior Township and left the highway.
