The city will again use DDT to spray its elm trees this I year, the City Council decided last night. It approved the awarding of a contract to the Michlin I Chemical for delivery of the spray at a cost of 86 cents I per gallon. In reporting on the elm tree problem, Parks I partment Supt. S. Sheldon Sproull told the council that I oxychlor had not proved effective in combating Dutch Elm I disease. The city used methorychlor two years ago after numerous I citizens had objected to the use of DDT on the grounds that I it killed birds. Sproull said that the city's experience indicates I that the incidence of Dutch Elm disease when methoxychlorj is used is twice that when DDT is used. He said other cities have experienced similar results. I "We either have to beat the disease back down or we've lost I the battle," Sproull said. "We have to use DDT. Methoxychloi I isn't good enough." Also last night, the council approved contraéis for I crete work and painting at park shelters. Delf & Sons was i awarded the painting contract a bid of $1,862, while the con-ll crete work went to the Washtenaw Asphalt Co. with its bid'l of $2,143. i 1
