Did you ever plant a tree when you were a child? In observance of A r b o r Week, the Ann Arbor Garden Club, with the assistance of the Washtenaw County Soil Conservation District, plans to help several thousand young Ann Arborites have this experience. Seedling white pines (Michigan's state tree) will be distributed to several elementary schools and Garden Club members will demonstrate the planting and care of the trees. The first demonstration will be held tomorrow. Participating will be fourth and fifth graders at Mack, Lawton, Newport, Thurston, St. Francis and St. Paul's schools. During the demonstrations, held at the individual schools, each child will be given a sheet of instructions to help him in the planting. On Thursday, Garden Club] members will take the demonstration to Mitchell School and Friday to Haisley School. Special science demonstrations for seventh grade pupils will bel conducted at Tappan, Forsythe, Slauson, Scarlett and Greenhills. Donald Zeeb, chairmen of the Washtenaw County Soil Conservation District, is getting the seedlings from a nursery near' Battle Creek. The district's new forestry program has been initiated to encourage people to plant trees and shrubs to enhance conditions for wildlife, protect soil and improve the natural beauty of the landscape.
