Two women were excused for cause and a civil engineer was seated as the jury-selection process entered its third week this morning in the John Norman Collins murder trial. Collins is accused of killing Eastern Michigan University coed Karen Sue Beineman. One of the women excused by Circuit Judge John W. Conlin saict she was a widow and being uestered for the duration of e trial would create a problem in caring for her three children. The second woman excused told Judge Conlin she knew a witness in the case and this would make it difficult for her to participate in the trial The man seated, as juror number 14, is employed by an engineering firm in Ann Arbor. He said he had no opinion about the case and presumed Collins to be innocent. He said it would seem to be in Collins' “best interest” for the accused man to answer charges presented by the prosecuting attorney, but this would not prevent him from presuming Collins' innocence. First Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Booker T Williams appeared this morning beside Prosecutor William F. Delhey for the first time since the trial began. Williams has been absent because of the recent illness and death of his wife. Joseph W. Louisell, chief defense counsel, and Prosecutor Delhey were scheduled to invoke peremptory challenges later today.
