New Crime-Finding 'Device'
Enters Murder Investigation

Sheriff Douglas J. Harvey said
today a new crime-detecting
"device" which has played a
key role in the apprehension of
eight murderers throughout the
nation is being introduced into
the Dawn Basom murder probe.

The sheriff said Prosecutor
William F. Delhey has given ap-
proval for use of the new "de-
vice," but both officials have
declined to describe it.

"You might call it a secret
weapon," Harvey said. "T h e
man who is in charge of it cer-
tainly has had fantastic results."

The device is to be employed
today and may be used later in
the week, the sheriff said.

Harvey and Detective Lt.
Stanton L. Bordine worked
through last night on what they
called a tip which shows "ex-
ceptional promise." The tip in-
volves the name of a person who
works and lives in the Ypsilanti
area and who has been men-
tioned periodically by other in-
vestigators on the case, it was
learned.

Meanwhile, Police Chief Wal-
ter E. Krasny reported receiv-
ing a dozen letters from seven
states in which theories on the
murders were expounded.

"One woman told of a dream

she had had in which she saw
the killing," Krasny said. "An-
other reported a peeping inci-
dent which happened to her
when she lived in Ann Arbor

The chief noted his detectives,
like those in the Sheriff's De-
partment, are accepting and

running down all leads in the
case. His department has a $7,-
500 fund appropriated by City
Council which can be used to re-
ward informants providing in-
formation on the case. The fund
is not a reward as such, but
can be used in that manner if
deemed desirable. I
