Bartow, Fla., Jan. 9th.,1888. Deak Akgus:- ïninking tfaat a few lines from the land of flowers might be of interest to some of your many readers, I take the liherty to write you describing some of the luxurles of a winter so f ar speut in Southern Florida. The ciimate, certainly, is one of the greatest luxuries, where the mereury ranges from 60 to 80 degrees during the. day and very seidom gets below 50 degrees at night. So f ar this winter Hiere has been f requeni rains, but I am told this is not common ia Florida, as they have their rainv season during the summer months and not much iu the winter. Flowers of all descriptions are in blootn and roses in profusión and the tinest 1 have ever seeu. This is a busy season for gardeners in this section, they are marketing their winter crops such as tomatoes, beans, potatops, (Irish), peas, radishes. lettuce, turaips, etc, and planting tor their early.suring erop. The land is line tor gardenlng purposes, wheu properly handled and fertilized, but the natives seern to knovv but very little about it and care less. They seern to be very shiftless. ïliere are comparatively few hearing orange groves iu this section, to whut there are in other sections, but there are a great many groves that have been started in the past two years, that seem to have made a fine growth and are looking line. They are comiuencing to set out quite a few peach trees in this section fcut only two or three small varieties of tthem seem to do well . These are the Peen To and Bid well. ïhey are in bíoom now and I am told they get f rom 50 to 60 cents a dozen for them. Strawberries seem to do well here wlien properlv cultivated. They are now ripeuing. I saw some of the flnest Sharpless berries, a few weeks ago that I ever saw, which shows what can be done here, when the berries are properlv treated. You will probably make up your mind by the tone of this letter that I am well pleased with Florida. Well I feel about as a Conneeticut nnm told me he feit after he carne here. Ile said he feit like kicking himself for not discovering this country bef ore.
