Washington City, Jan. 17.- While at dinner at the Riggs house Monday evening Speaker Carlisle was taken suddenly ill and reached his room with difficulty. Dr. Sowers pronounced his ailment a congestive chill and advised him to seek absolute quiet. He passed a wretched night and at 4 o'clock Tuesday morning he was again attacked with the chill. His friends are apprehensive of serious results.

Congressman Mills had a careful talk with Mrs. Carlisle about the speaker's condition, and frankly admits his alarm. He says Carlisle is a very sick man, although Dr. Sowers speaks very encouragingly, and predicts no alarming consequences of the attack.
