The Ground Donated for Tappan Hall.

The deed made Mrs. H.L. Sackett to the Trustees of the Presbyterian church of this city, in trust, of the property on the corner of State and Huron streets, now occupied by the School of Music, was filed in the register of deeds office, Tuesday. The deed was made on the 22d day of November, 1887. The property is to be held by the trustees for the sole and only use of the "Tappan Hall Association," the articles of incorporation of which are copied in the conveyance and made part of it. The trustees are not to sell, convey or mortgage the premises. The deed is on condition that within five years the trustees should cause to be erected thereon such main building or buildings as may be desired for the use of the Association and that thereafter such building should be actually and continuously used by the association. Mrs. Sackett also reserves the occupation of the building now on the premises during her lifetime, with the privilege at any time of surrendering entire possession to the trustees, when they shall pay her an annuity of $500 a year. She agrees to keep up the taxes and insurance on the part of the premises occupied by her, the trustees to make all exterior repairs, etc. Another condition is that within ninety days after her death, or at any time she gives up possession the trustees are to place a stone tablet place in the front exterior wall of the dwelling, which shall read, "This edifice and lots were donated by H. Louisa Sackett for the use of the Tappan Presbyterian Hall Association, as a permanent memorial for her dear departed and only son, Walter A. Sackett." The object of the Tappan Association is thus stated in the second article of the Articles of Association.

The object of this Association shall be to bring the Presbyterian students of the University of Michigan into closer acquaintance and more intimate union with each other, to confirm the faith of the students coming from Presbyterian families, to promote the spiritual welfare of the members of the Association and increase their influence in advancing the cause of Christianity, to secure an eligible site in the city of Ann Arbor upon which to erect a building to be known as "Tappan Hall" and to support therein a Library, to provide course of lectures and other means of advancement of knowledge and to secure the endowment and support of lecture-ships, chairs of instruction and other means of education, connected with literary benevolent and Christian topics and also in preparation for the Christian Ministry.
