Boston, Mass., Fb. 1. - Professor Asa Gray, the eminent botanist and proiessor of botany at Harvard collega, diei of puralysis iu Cambridge Mouday eveuiiijr, aged 77. Asa Gray, M. D., LL. D. , was boru at Paris, N. Y., Nov. i8, 1S10. He graduated from the Fairfield Medical college in 1831, but soon relinquisliod the practice of mJicine and devote i himselĂ­, uader Professor Tor ey of New York, to he study oL botany. jn 1834 he received the appointoient of botanist of the United Btates exploring expedition, but he decim"d it In JS42 lie waa elected fisher professor of natural h istory ia Harvard college. In adrliiion to his led ure& at Cambridge, he delivered three courses of lectures before the Lowell institute in Boston. He is the author of numerous books. He visited Europe in lS38-'39 an 1 again in 1S5O-'5I, and had contriuuted numerous papers to scieutifle periodicals and to the transactions of iearned societies. In 18!4 he was choseu ouo oL the regents of the Smithsonian institution, and in 1878 the Academie des Science of Paris elected him a corresponding meinber in the seetion of botany.
