The session of the council, Mönday nigbt, was a very brief ore. E. M. Southard petitioned the aldermeu to repeal part of the ordinanee clinp; barber shops and bath rooms on 8n:iday so as to permit hirn to keep liis bath rooms open on tbat day. Instead of doinp; this the conncü itistructed the marshal not to enforce that part of ;the ordinanee relating to bath rooms. But s an ordinanee cannot be repealed by resolution, the resolution is not ïeally worth the paper it was witten upon. Postmaster Duffy ciilled the council's attenlion .to the gang of idlers aud newsboys who congrégate in the postoffice, chewiug tobáceo, ssvearing and cursing and asked that a policeman be stationed in the postoffice until the nuisance was abated. The petition was referred to the pólice cominittee. The comttiittee did uot seein to thiuk that Marshal SipuVy could be at the postoffice and distributing poor funds at the same time but he will be instructed to ppend as much of his time as possible at the postollice. Eleven of the State btreet business men petitioned Ihafc the improper use of 8tate stieet tor a wood market should cease. The matter will come up at n later meeting. On motion of Aldermau Wines the siim of $180.17 was appropriated frotn the general iïiiul to pav the balance on lot 5, block 5, U. S.Smith's east addition on line of Church stieet between Orleans and llill street. The order is mude payable to the mayor, who Btated that fie liad advaoced that amount of money . ïhe fact was developed tliat a liglit of vv;iy turough another lot would have to be eondermied hs the owner would not sell. The Church street octopus is ínereasing the deíiciency at the end of the year in the funds of the city. Itstaited out witli an appropriation of S-'-Xi, uliich was understood to be all that was needed to puicbase tlie risrbt of way necessary to open Church street. N ow $180 is added to this and a f urtber expense remains to be incurred. This isafruitfultopicand atsome future day we will cali our readers attention to the immense public demand for the opening of the street. the pressing necessity of the expense together with the owners of the land benefited by it. The marshal's report showed that he had expended S336. 62 for the relief of the poor of the city during January. This was drawn froin the various waid funds as follows: First, S17.63; Second, $17.13; Third, S44.77; Fourth, $141 08; Fifth, f89.96 and Sixth, $22.75. The marshal also reported that hshad made seven arrests during the month. Treasurer Moore reported that he had received $2, üne money; S12.39 officers fees, $26.24, delinquent taxes and had collected on state, couuty, school and city taxes about $.r)0,000. He had during Jamiary paid out $556 26 from the contingent fiind, $868.58 from the general t'uud, $33 35 from the general streef fund, $2,381.85 from the water worka fund and $36.58 from the various ward funds besides turning over $15,000 toltlie school funds and $13,000 to the county treasurer. Thejcouncil adjonrned by half-past eight.
