Philadelphia, Pa. , April 3. - It was stated Monday night by reliable authority that Claus Spreckles, the California sugar king, has decided to build a refinery in Philadelphia, and that the purchase of a site for it on the Delaware river front will be consumated. Mr. Spreckels spent a part of Monday in consultation with John G. Johnson, relative to the purchase of the site for the refinery. He also conferred during the day with Mr. George Phillier, president of the First National bank, Wharton Barker, Isaac Hough, and others. It is understood that $5,000,000 capital will be put into the enterprise, all to be supplied by Mr. Spreckels himself , and that contracts for the erection, machinery, etc., will be placed in a few days.
