St. Louis, April 9. - William H. Barnum, chairman of the Democratie natioual committee, arrived in this city Sunday morning and took parlors at the Southern hotel. About noon a deoutation of citizens. headed by Mayor Francis, waited npon him and extended the hospitalitiesof the city. The party dined together, and later Mr. Barnum went to the jiayor's residence and then for a drive through the parks. The local committee of arrangements for the convention met at the mayor's office Monday and informally discussed plans. It is reasonably certain that the north nave of the exposition building will be selected in which to hold the national convention, although curious eomplieations have arisen over its seleotion. It appears the north nave was rented to the saengerfest for its annual meeting on June 11, and its manager says inasmueh as the saengerfest will be put to the expense of $15,000 in preparing the nave for use, the Democrats jught to pay J5,000 of that amount for ocöupation duriug the week of June 5. The local committee did not seem to think the demand was reasonable but a compromise will probably be effected.
