Fire On West Huron Street

Fire on West Huron Street. Fire broke out in the residence of the late Samuel P. Jewett on West Huron street last Friday evening at eleven o'clock. Some little time elapsed before the alarm was sounded and when the fire bell first rung, citizens rushed to their windows to find the sky aglow. The department turned out quickly and did what they could toward staying the ravages of the flames. The furniture was removed from the house, even the parlor carpets being taken up. The furniture was however badly damaged. The fire was extinguished before the house was entirely burned to the ground, yet it was left almost a total wreck. The house was unoccupied excepting two rooms, occupied by a student and his wife. There was a fire in the grate and it is supposed the fire caught from the chimney. Mr. Jewett did not carry any insurance. Judge Kinne, for the benefit of the estate, had placed an insurance of $2,000 on the building, only a week before the fire, in the Commercial Union of London. There was no insurance on the furniture. The loss on the building is $4,000.
