New York, June 19. - Mrs. Louis Lambkin. vvife of a Germán living in Jacksonville, N. J. , in the locality known as Cheesequake, was startled late at night by ths sudden appearance in her house of a large man ivith wild eyes and a heavy sandy raustache. The man sprang toward her. butshe avoidedhim, seized her two children, and fled frorn the house. Knocking the woman down, the pursuing man began to pluck savagely at her eyes with his finger nails. Mrs. Lambkin resisted as well as she was able, getting one of her assailant's hands in her inouth and biting it. She screamed loudly and attracted the nttention of men who carne as speedily as possible to her rescue. Before they reached the scène of the struggle. uowever, the brute had succeeded in gouging out one eye completel}' and seriously injuring the other. The assailant was bound securely with ropes, and was identified as Charles Walter, a briuklayer. He is undoubtedly insana.
