Tottie Editor of the Argus: In the Democrat of August lOth, there appeared an item in the column eutitled, " Our Man About Town," whioh is a slur on the good masons, as it states we are. Now, Mr. Stick-yournose-in-other-peop!e's business, ïf you had inquired aud informed yourself, you could have saved yourself the trouble of priutiug such slanderous and malicious lies. There is not a masón among us that has refused to wortt 9 hours a day for 83.50, nor one that has asked for an eight-hour day, as our scale of wages adopted last January is from S2.50 to S3.00 per day, although sonie of us have received $3.50. Aa to our " lying around," we have a good reason, as the contractors and a number of business men organized a uniou, lecked us out, refused to give us work and imported strangers to fill our places. Why? Because we daré to belong to a unión and ask 9 hours" pav for a 9 hourday. But we live and do not steal, nor do we ask alms of the tax-payer, as the most of us are tax-payers ourselves.
