A good sized barn and carpenter shop belonging to George Winslow, on Sixth street, was burned about one o'elock Sunday morning. ïhe fire department responded at once to the alarm but were unable to open the hydrant and obtain the necessary water. A bucket brigade was organized by, the fire laddies and, the wind being right, the house was saved with water from the cutera. The loss was $300, partially msured. The failure to open the hydrant, which was flnally broken, excited considerable comment, many people having the idea that there had been direlection of duty on the part of the department. But sueh is not the case. The hydranc was opened six weeks ago and it is not the business of the department to keep the hydrants in order. That is the business of the water works company.
