Extermination Of Hemlock
Mr. Edward Jack, writing about hem lock in The New York Lumber Trade Journal, says that until lately it has beei abundant in Maine and iu the marítimo provínoos of Canuda, but ax and lire aro fast exterminating it. The liability oL the tree to be blown down on account of its bnshy tops causes windfalls which sometimes cover considerable arcas, over which flrcs rage furiously. The lateral roots run nenr the suríaee to a great distance, and when the tree is blown down they bring up large masses of carth. In a windfail the trunks, tops and the clumps of eiirlh brought up by the roots form n, tangle thi'OUgh which one can make only little progress. Two days of hard worlc were required to get through three or four miles of a tract Mr. Jiick was once iuspecting. - New York Sun.
