A. P. Smith,a junior hocnoeopathic medical student, wlio roomed on Liberty street, eommitted suicide Tnesday forenoon by cutting his throat. He had been ill for a couple of weeks f rom a kidney disease which produced mental depression. His room mate, who had been attending him stepped into an adjoining room and was gone not over Ove minutes. When he returned Mr. Smith ;was found on the bed a pool of blood on the floor and the blood welling from a ghastly, gaping wound Ín his throat. lie had evidently stood befóte the mirror, thrown back his head and with steady hand drawn a sharp dissecting knife across his throat. completely severing the wind pipe and aitery. Laying the knife down on the burean, he had staggered back to the bed. Drs. Breakey, O'Betz and Campbell were immediately summoned but nothing could be done to save the unfortunate man, who struggled in fearful agony. He lived about half an hour after cntting his throat. It is believed now that he had contemplated suïcide for two or three days. Sunday he had taken a strong dose of opium and 8undav night he had applied chloroform freely, but it was then believed that he was merely seeking to relieve the pain in which he was in. ' Mr. Smith was twenty four years ot age, His father and an uncle reached here Tuesday oight and took the remains to their home in Bath, Michigan, thenextmorning.
