New York, Nov. 5. - A dispatch was received at the marítima exehange in this city Monday raorning from Liverpool, stating that the British steamship Marathon, with a cargo of cotton from West Point, was on fire at her doek in Liverpool. The fire began in the hold wuere the cotton was stowed anc burned flercely for almost an hour before it was discovered. One of the crew was overeóme hy the smoke. His life is despaired of. For five hours the fire raged, destroying in that time '200 bales of cotton. Then it waa got under control and extinguisbed. The ship was badly burned and will have to be thoroughly overhauled before it can put to sea again. The remainder of her cargo, some 600 bales of cotton, was so badly injured by water tbat it can not be used.
