Chicago, Dae. 5. - A water ways couvention was hálá bere ye3terday, consistinp; of delegates from this city and the ottaer chief cities on the line of the XUinois & Michigan canal and on the Illinois river. The state canal coraraissioners vere also present. The object was to discuss projected drainago and sbip canal scbemes, looking to the construction of a steamer ehannel connecting Lake Michigan with the Illinois and Miásissippi rivers, Chicago's interest in it being not only of a commercial character but also a matter of gettiug riJ of the graat volume of sewage of this city. There waB much talk, but it all crystalizsd into the resol ut ion: "That it is the sense oL th'n meeting that the cltizens on the Desplaines an i DHuois rivers will oppose all proposition i from Chicago to construct a channel to carry it sewage through the Desplaines and Illinois rivers. unless saki channel shall be coustructed of such capacity as to bo usecl as a part of iinprovement to connect L.ke Michigan with the Mississippi river," which was amended to provide that "the channel shall not be lasa ia width than 160 feet and of a depth of not loas than 22 feet and of a sufucient grade per mile to lusure at all times a flow of not less than 600,000 cubic teet per minute," and then adopted, and tue convention adjourned.
