Washington City, Dec. 20.- The senate yesterday agreed to a res;lution calling oa the naval office for informa tion as to the expenditure of 4825,000 appropriated for eonstruction and repair, aud also to a resolution the pith of whicb was a request for information as to whether the proiosedNew York custom house bad not been planned larger tlian the lot it is to stand upon. The tariff debate was proceeded with and a nuraber of amend menta offered by Democratie senators were rejected. Voorbees savagely attacked the bilí, declaring it in several features a partisan blow at the south. After an executive session the senate adjourned. Springer anuounced to the house that be would cali up the bill for the udmission of territories Jan. 15. The house retusad to consider the bill allowing a clerk to every meinber of congress not a committee ehairman. The river and harbor bill as takeu up and defpuded by Blanchard and Crain, and peudinj; further debate the house adjourned. Washington City, Dec. 21. - The senate got rid of the adjournmeut question yesterday by an agreement to adjourn over the holidays from to-day uutil Jan. SJ, the Democrats agreeing tbat voting on the tarifï bill aud amendments shall begin Jan. 21 at 1 p. ni., and continue without debate (unless unanimous consent is given tberefor) until the bill is disposed of. Gibson offered a resolution to inquire into the state elections iu Rhode Is'.and and Louisiana, and thepresideutial election in New York and Indiana; laid on the ta ble. Upon resumption of the tariff bill the only changas made were an increase intbedutyon wine in cases of one dozen bottles to $1.M) per case, and on the bottles to i% cents per pint. Plumb offered a resolution calling for a f uil and detailed statement of purchases of bonds since Maren 4 1885. The direct tax bill was referred with the house amendments to the finance committee. Ninety private pension bilis were passed in fifty minutes, and tbe bill opening to settlement abandoned military reserva, tions in Nevada was agreed to. A short ex ecutive sessiou was held, and the sonate adjourned. The house agreed to the senate amendmenis to the biil incorporating the American. Historieal soeioty and to the conference report on the bill for relief of the Chippewa Iudians in Minnesota. The holiday recess resolution, as adoptad by the senate, was agreed to. It was agreed to limit debate on the river and harbor bill to an hour and a half. The cousideration of the bill got as f ar as the commencement of reading it by paragraphs when the house adjourned. Washington City, Dec. 22.- Tbe senate yesterday passed the deficiency bill for the pubiic printing office - $tífi,000. A resolution was adopted instructing the public buildings committee to investígate the supervising architect's office and one asking the treasury for a statement of bond purchases since March 4, 1S"5, was also agreed to. The t ariff bill was taken up again, but no progress made except in oratory. The house amendments to the senate bill forfeiting the Marquette & Ontonagon railway land grant in Michigan were non-concurrad in, and after a brief secret session the senate ad-, jourued to Wednesday, Jan. 2, 1889. Beyond consideration of the Nicaragua canal bill the house transacted no business of importance yesterday. TLis bill was aniendedas follows: Requiring all securicies of the canal to be issued at the New York office, and that they shall all be paid for in cash; requiring the majority of the directors to be citizns and residents of tnis country, and all either Americans or Niearauans; providing that no change affecting American rights shall be made without the consent of the United States; requiring annual reports to the secretary of the interior, and declaring false statements perjury, and punishing tbem as such. The previous question was ordered on the bill anJ amendments, and, after a few local measures had been disposed of, the house adjourned to Jan. 'i
