There seems no serióos diíñcnlty, on the engineering side, in securing and maintaining a speed of 100 miles an hour, or probably more; but the capitalist is here intimidated. Higher speeds cost money for initial and operativo expenses in vastly higher ratio thaneither increase of speed or the returns to be expeeted on capital so invested. Onr fastest traina do not diroctly pay, even now, when the wear and tear of engines, cars, roadbed and bridges, to say nothing of flesh and blood, nerves and health, are considered. When tho people want higher speeds, and need them so badly as to be able and wüling to pay for them, the engineers will construct and the railroads vrill furnish trains of still higher
