Fred V. L. Smith is the inventor of a peculiar electrical apparatus for the purpoee of producing flash lights to imítate lightning on the stage. Flash lights are located among the flies, and are operated froni a small resistance block not more than six inchea square. - Pittsboxg Dipatch. Very ObUglng. There is a tradesman in this rillage who occasionally geta off a good thing. The fact that he is innocent of any intent to joke adds force to his coraical saylngs. The other day a lady called at his place of business and asked: "Have you spittoons?" "Eh?" said the merchant, pricking up his ears. "Can you show me a spittoonf" repeated the lady in a high key. "No," said the merchant; "I hve nothing of the kind. But," he added hospitably, "you can spit in the coal hod." The listenere chuckled audibly, and the lady smiled and took a hasty departure.-
