England's Liberal Leader

Wiliiam Ewart G-ladstone was bom in Liverpool, England, in 1809. He was educated at Oxford, graduating in 1831. He entei'ed parliament as a Conservative in 1832, held various places of trust til] 1859, when as chancellor of the exchequer in Palmerston's cabinet he acted with the Liberáis. He was made prime minister in 1868, retired in 1874, was again chosen in 1880, resigned in 1885, returned to power later in the same year, and was overthrown on the question of home rule in 1886.
