This float in the University's Homecoming parade--described by one of its creators as "a make believe yellow monster with a big eye that flaps its ears and squirts steam"--won a new U-M Alumni Association award as superior float of the year. Builders were Theta Delta Chi fraternity and Sigma Kappa sorority. This year's theme for floats was "Motions in Maize." The new award is a plaque which will go to a new winner yearly.

The six-layered desert, which is decorated with slivered almonds to give it a porcupine look, has been sprinkled layer by layer, with brandy before being frosted. Napfkuchen, another German cake, is served with Mrs. Bevins' orange and lemon frostings. Mrs. Bevins' bridge guests often enjoy these desserts.

The giraffe has become a well-known friend to kindergarteners in Miss Sally Pryce's class at Ann Arbor's Stone School. The children made the large giraffe and the little ones too with very little assistance, out of paper- mache. The giraffe was studied by the children because of its unusual characteristics, such as its method of drinking water and lack of a voice box. The physical education teacher had to learn some new techniques now required by the Red Cross for certification as Water Safety instructors. Greenlick, who also has been waterfront director at Interlochen for many years, will retire this June.

Plaques Recovered: Patrolman Richard Anderson and Detective Lt. Eugene Staudenmaier examine two metal plaques recovered yesterday from a campus area building which is being remodeled. The smaller plaque has been missing for some time from the Broadway bridge where it marked the site where the Potawatomi "and other Indian tribes" crossed the Huron River. It also was a marker for the location of the old Washtenaw Hotel. The larger plaque which weights more than 200 pounds notes that the Society of Sigma XI purchased the tablet in 1936 for the 50th anniversary of the founding of the society at Cornell University. Police do not know where the large plaque belongs.

Parkview's kitchen, part of a two-room apartment, is available to patients who wish to find out how well they will function again in their kitchens at home. The apartment will be used to house a college student or perhaps the entire family of a handicapped person, so that they can learn, on the spot, how to care for him. Patients also may practice household tasks before they go home.

Beer 'Bust': State Liquor Control Commission Investigator Michael Pekrul, left, and Ann Arbor Police Detective Lt. Eugene L. Staudenmaier pour the first of 349 12-ounce bottles of beer down a drain at the rear of City Hall. The beer, in addition to 12 pints of whiskey, 16 bottles of wine and a quarter barrel of beer, was dumped yesterday into the drain as part f a routine police procedure in disposing of confiscated intoxicants. A state liquor detective is required to attend such dispositions.

A former stockman at the store has been charged with larceny in the theft of scores of items including television sets, a bed, sheets and radios. Recovered merchandise is still coming into city police headquarters.

Mrs. Hoover Rupert, who is working to alert ministers of the coming gourmet dinner for the Committee of Responsibility, gets a "sneak preview" of the oriental musical instruments which university Prof. William P. Malm will use to entertain persons attending the fund-raising event. The Committee of Responsibility is a national group which is brining Vietnamese war-injured children to America for a temporary treatment period. The local chapter of the organization will sponsor the dinner at 7 pm Saturday, May 17, at the Congregation Church. Donations will be accepted for the dinner. Those wishing to attend may make reservations with Sister Mary Maier.

The New Look: The eight motorcycle patrolmen in the Ann Arbor Police Department's Traffic Division have discarded their navy blue cloth "riding coats" worn in cold weather for the new, light blue nylon jackets. Police Chief Rolland J. Gainsley said the new jackets will be warmer and will give them easier movement. The officers are (left to right) Cpl. Alroy Vanderpool, Traffic Division command office, Patrolmen Walter DeDula, Robert Mueller, Arthur Hughes, Charles Fleming, Robert Robinson, William Miller, and Arvil Patton. Patrolman Robert O'Dell, also a motorcycle officer, was on University patrol duty at the time the picture was taken.

Donald Zutter presented them with the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Medal, Vietnam Campaign Ribbon, Vietnam Service Ribbon, Expert Automatic Weapon Badge and Sharpshooter Rifle Badge."

Recreation Cell At Jail. County Jail prisoners are shown using some of the new equipment and supplies purchased to outfit a new "recreation cell" for inmates. Sheriff Douglas J. Harvey said about $300 was used to purchase game equipment for the cell which prisoners will be allowed to visit at periodic intervals. For years inmates had only a small room containing a few books as a recreation area.
