Going . . . Going . . . Gone! Things looked a bit grim for eight-year-old Douglas Hehr during Saturday's bicycle auction by the Ann Arbor Police Department. Although he bid on almost every bike, Douglas always watched someone else buy it with the expressions shown here. Noticing this, the auctioneer, Patrolman Chester Carter, finally said: "I have a bid of $5 from this little boy and I can't hear any other bids. Sold!" Police sold a total of 69 bicycles for $1, 120.

Packard Rd., shown here in a view toward the east near Buhr Park, will eventually be a five-lane pavement along this stretch although workmen are currently working only on widening the thoroughfare to four lanes. The City Council has authorized the purchase of land on the north side of Packard to enable construction of the fifth lane sometime in the future. Workmen are now installing the curb and gutter along the south side (right) of Packard while cars are using the old pavement. The Packard widening project is expected to be completed sometime in November.

There are 40 one-bedroom, 205 two-bedroom and 155 three-bedroom apartments in the complex.

Excavation for the University's new $1,120,000, 4 1/2-deck, 500-car parking structure on Hill between Tappan and E. University, comes within seven feet of the old Mack Residence, now the home of the U-M department of landscape architecture. When completed in June, 1970, the parking structure will provide parking for the U-M's School of Business Administration, School of Education, Law School and College of Architecture and Design. The Mack Residence, formerly a girls dormitory, will remain the headquarters for the department of landscape architecture, according to James F. Brinkerhoff, director of U-M business operations. The 254-foot-long front of the parking structure will be on Hill, with entrance and exit ramps opening on that street. It will contain two stairways and an elevator.

THe seal, designed by Pioneer senior Jane Mariouw, is one of many art works which will be exhibited tomorrow through June 5 on the second floor of Ann Arbor City Hall as part of Ann Arbor High School's annual spring art exhibit. The seal was commissioned by the 1968 graduating class at Pioneer as their class gift to the school. Miss Mariouw's drawing were selected and she was chosen as the artist to complete the seal. She has worked all year on the mosaic. The seal will become a permanent feature at the entrance to the Pioneer High library. North is chairman of the Pioneer High art department."

Safe Recovered: Ann Arbor Detective Eugene Staudenmeier checks the 300-pound office safe which he and State Police Troopers Raymond L. Coger and Leonard F. Miller, jr., of the Ypsilanti post pulled from 15 feet of water yesterday in the Huron River. The safe, originally containing more than $400 in cash, was stolen in a break-in Dec. 17 from the Cottage Inn Restaurant at 512 E. William St., Ann Arbor. It was recovered by the three officers near the sewage disposal plant east of Dixboro Rd. in Ann Arbor township after it was first seen by a fisherman. There were some papers in the safe, which had been forced open, but the money was missing.
