Made of a steel bucket, with a glass panel for vision and a heavy rim, the device weighed about 25 pounds. Air was supplied by a hose leading to the top, supplied by air compressors in a boat near the shore. Air pressure kept water from entering at the bottom according to the owner, William Stevens, 17, Whitmore lake.

WHEN GALES RAGE THIS DUNE PROTECTS: Dewey Hill stands at the end of Grand Haven's main street, serving as a buffer against the rush of western winds. The sands of the great dune are still active, as may be judged by the bareness of the crest shown above the roofs of the dock building at the right. Grand river is shown flowing along the eastern base of the dune, which constantly threatens to engulf it. A fishing village nestles in the lee of the dune.

MUSKEGON DUNES ARE STILL ACTIVE: This picture taken in the moving sands area of Muskegon State Park shows typical phases of dunes action. At the right and left are amphitheaters formed by blow outs. In the top center are hollows and cuts made by the wind. At the top of the amphitheater to the right is a break in the vegetation that formerly held the dune in place and sands are flowing over the crest to engulf the forest growth beyond. The pine tree on the ridge at left center appears doomed not through burial but through undermining by wind erosion. Efforts have been made to hold the sands with beach grass, as can be seen in the foreground. Wherever the winds can get at the sands such efforts suffer defeat.

Once the river circled Baldhead and entered the lake through a channel immediately at the left of the row of rotting piles. The center ear is a large normal ear of corn, and grown closely around it are seven smaller ears, ranging from two to six inches in length. Most surprising to Mr. Schroen, however, is the fact that the freak ear went through the husking machine without losing its appendages.
