DELHI SCHOOL PUPILS LEAD IN READING PROJECT: Everyone of the 23 pupils of the Delhi school has won a county reading certificate, given to students who have read and reported on at least 15 books. Some of the Delhi pupils have read as many as 100 books, and the school is one of the outstanding in the county in the use of the circulating county library. Shown in this picture is one of the school's two cases of books containing more than 600 volumes. WASHTENAW FARMERS GET $100,000 IN SOIL ACT PAYMENTS: William Austin of Saline is shown here receiving his federal check for co-operating with the government in the 1936 soil conservation program, and in the background are some of the other participants in the program waiting to receive their checks yesterday from Harry M. Cole, secretary of the county association. A total of approximately $100,000 was to have been paid here Saturday, Monday and yesterday to more than 900 Washtenaw farmers. It was the final payment on the 1936 program, and checks ranged from $2.60 to the $689 paid a Superior township land owner.

"The woman receiving the corsage is Florence Ruthven, wife of Alexander Grant Ruthven, President of the University of Michigan from 1929 to 1951. Presenting the gardenia corsage was Mrs. Frederick Amasa Coller, whose husband was Professor of Surgery and Chairman of the Department of Surgery in the University of Michigan Medical School. The woman at right is one of the three founders of the Ann Arbor Garden Club, Elizabeth (Mrs. James) Inglis, whose 1927 French Chateau on Huntington Drive, overlooking the Arboretum, now belongs to the University." - Wystan Stevens

HIDDEN DOCKS AT CALCITE - Here is one of Henry Ford's freighters, Edgewater, being loaded with crushed limestone - used in steel manufacture - at a dock hidden from public view by great mills, giant conveyors, and huge piles of material. This particular boat leaves no smoke trail behind it, as it is a Diesel motor ship. The docks at Calcite are busy during navigation season, a special parade of boats plying between here and various steel mill ports.

"Smoke Trails", Bay City, MI to 40 Mile Point, MI - Houses. 40 Mile Point is in Presque Isle County on Hammond Bay on the western shore of Lake Huron in Rogers Township, MI. The 40 Mile Point Lighthouse was built in 1896 to assist ships through the dangerous shoreline where open water, hidden shoals and false bays had claimed a number of vessels.

ON THUNDER BAY: Alpena has a unique beach at Mich-e-ke-wis Park. Low waters in the Great Lakes have left broad flats exposed, with sands so hard that automobiles can drive to the edge of the waves, or even into them. Bathers use a moveable dock to get into the clear waters back from the immediate shore. A kiddy slide and diving dock are anchored far out in the shoal waters. In the distance is Grass Island.
