Rehearse for Pageant: There was lots of activity at West Park Band Shell yesterday as children from various city playgrounds rehearsed their parts for the playground pageant ""American Storybook."" It will be given at the shell at 8:15 p.m. tomorrow, or in case of rain, on Thursday. Supervising the Rip VanWinkle scene above are Virginia Dawson (left), Donald J. Shetler, director, throwing bowling ball, and Rosemary Scanlon (right), who has charge of dancing.

Signs of Summer: City workmen are removing leaves from the two municipal wading pools at West Park (shown here) and Burns Park in preparation for the summer season of the Recreation Department. The program, opening next Monday, will include supervised play periods in the pools which are equipped with shower-type sprays. Leaves shown being removed by tractor-mounted scoop and dump trucks are intentionally packed in the concrete pools to prevent cracking from freezing during the winter. The pools are favorite spots for many youngsters.

Park Band Opens Summer Season: The Ann Arbor Park band, sponsored by Joseph F. Buhr of the Buhr Machine Tool Co., opened its summer season last night with a concert in West Park. The band, directed by D. C. Ryan, is shown playing from the orchestra shell for a gathering of music lovers sitting on benches and on the grass. Present plans call for a series of six Sunday evening concerts by the band, which is composed of both union and non-union musicians employed in Ann Arbor, many of them at the Buhr plant. The band was organized last summer by Mr. Buhr for the benefit of both music-lovers and musicians.

BLESSING BRONCO -- Six-year-old Neil Zajic's hamster, Bronco, was one of the many animals, from poodles to pythons, blessed by the Rev. Mark Inglot of Ann Arbor's St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church Sunday afternoon in his annual blessing of parishioners' pets. St. Francis of Assisi, founder of the Franciscan order in Italy in the 13th century, for whom the church is named, was noted for his lover of nature, and is often depicted in art preaching to the birds.
