Hirsch is shown in this spring 1944 photo laughing at News photographer Eck Stanger for setting up a corny picture to show that the recruit from the University of Wisconsin performed brilliantly in four sports for Michigan. Hirsch's German name means "deer," and he ran like one for Michigan and later in professional football.
