Notes: Dill may be used at any age: microgreens, young leaves, flower heads, and seeds. Host plant for Swallowtail Butterfly caterpillars. Part of Michigan’s great pickle growing and processing heritage.

  • Dill is in the plant family Apiaceae (a-pee-AY-see-ee), the same family as carrots, parsley, celery, and fennel.
  • Dill’s botanical name is Anethum graveolens
  • Dill flowers heads are called “umbels” and resemble the spokes of an umbrella
  • Dill is an annual plant, which means it germinates, grows, and sets seed, all in one year.
  • Another name for the feathery leaves of dill is “fronds.”
  • The leaves and seed heads of dill are used in recipes for pickles, salads, dips, and many other dishes.
  • If you let the seeds dry on the plant and fall to the ground, they will “self-sow” in the spring. You may never have to plant dill again!
  • Dill is native to Asia and the Mediterranean region
  • Dill attracts beneficial insects like lacewings to your garden that prey on aphids and cabbage moths
  • Dill repels pests and is a great companion plant for the cabbage family (brassicas) and cucumbers.
  • Dill seeds make delicious sprouts and microgreens

Dill’s Michigan Connection
For over 100 years, Michigan has been the #1 producer of pickling cucumbers in the nation. Because of this, Michigan gave rise to many of the important names in dill pickle production around the turn of the last century, including Heinz and Vlasic. Growing pickles and dill to supply these companies is a part of Michigan’s rich agricultural heritage.
