Nor need we fear that vc should curtail the Executive power loo much. A 11 nppointments for the Army, the Navy, the Public Lands, the L.dinn affairs, the Foreign Service and for Jobs and Contracts wouldstill be made by the General Government; and the number of these s constantly augmenting wiih the increase toour natiooal domain, the settlement oí the Public Lands, and the addition of New States. The influence of the Executive has steadily increased since the formation of the Government, and unless it be checked in some way, it will soon far overbalance the Legislative and Judicial departments. The alterations we have suggested would materially abridge this augmenting preponderance, while il would in many other respects have a salutary tendency. But no measures of this kind should be adopted without mueh forethought and rigid investigation. Change in the manner of governing a people is ilselfan evil, and no changes should ever be made which would need reversing. But we should not be ihereforeafraid of all changes, f rom a disrrust of ourselves, and a blind reverence for our predecessors. One extreme is as mischievous as the other.
