Dr. Dentón, in the Senatc, has introduced a resolution requiring the following provisión to bo incorporated with tho Revised Statutes, under their approprinte heads. which was agrecd to : 'Thai a'l collectors of public rmneys, as township.'-.ouiuj' or stato iruasurers fc all ofiicers who collect moncy for others by a law, ns consiuMcs. sheriílí, clerks. justices of the poace, attorneys. Sec, who sha II lail to pay over sucli moncy. shall bc decmod Ruilty of a wilml ncglect, - and on a jiidgmcnt Ueing recovercd ilu-rcfor, he shail p;y to tho sherilV five per cent more tliiin ilic amountBO letained, and shall bekept in close confín ;ment until the sanie be paid.' As an advocate of Equal Justice, we should be wanting to our duty, did we not express our approbation of this provisión. The law punishes the smallest larceny by a petty pickpocket with the severest penalties, while gentlemen who can filch the public monies by thousands, ride in their splendid carriages, and after n while respectfully ask the Legislature or Congross to compromise with them! - TheofTicials, finding not hing can be gained by lav, take what they may be willing to hand over, leaving the gentlemen to revel in their ill golten wealth, to roll through tho streets in brood cloth, and discoursc, perhops, of the vulgarity of the "lower classes." Some provisión of the kind is especially neecssary in reference to attorneys. We believe, it is a very common thing for business men to put demands into their hL.nJs for colleclion, and after the money is collected, they find that it is more difilcult to collect it from the attorney than from the original debtor. A remedy for breaches of trust oflhis kind is needed. These are in fact, in many cases, only another mode of stealing. We are for cqual justice. We know an individual who hasserved his time in our State Prison for stealing a horse-collar, and of another for stealing an ox chati) : and there is one now in that Prisfrom this county, sentenced, for Jive years for stealing an old pair of stockings, and some otlier articles, the total value of which was sworn to bejifly cenisi All these were poor, laboring men. If justice be meted out to them so severely, shall gentcel scoundrels go at large?CC We have reeeived a report of the majority of the Senate Judiciary Committee in favor of exempting from snle, ibr debt or liability incurrcd after July 1, 1847, renl estáte to tho amount of 500 to nctual residents. The report, as a whole, is a good one. --„
