Eighteon vessels were also burnt in Ihe harbor. The loss must bc severely lelt by its inhnbitants, i beitig ihe business part of tho town, and beitig at a eeason of the yenr when the merchante are engaged princlpally in tho manufacture of Jheir oil, 9, largo fjnaniisy of which must have been in the vats. The loss will also fall hea vily on the fishermen, as they will fiud great dirliculiy in procuriug provisions to prosecute the cod fishery the present season. Sf. Johus containsa population of abou 20,000 inhabitants. The town was burnt twice before - once in 1823, when most of the inhabitants took refuge on board the vessels in the harbor for safety, and aain partly in 1840. Jt seems to be an ill fated lown. Tho buildings were princi)ally of wood.
