Description

Inter-Cooperative Council at Ann Arbor

"The high-spirited house members that have resided in Nakamura coop year to year have created a strong sense of acceptance, inclusivity, and community. From the prime location at the intersection of Hill street and S State street to the beautiful foundation of cooperativity that the house is based upon, this is a truly unique place to live. Arguably one of the best locations of all of the co-ops on campus, Nakamura is located across from several amazing restaurants, including Pizza Bob's, Mr. Spot's, Moon's Cafe, Jimmy Johns, and more. Directly across the street, Campus Corner is a quick and easy place to get essentials without having to walk or drive. The Diag is only a five minute walk away, making Nakamura feel like it is in the center of activity on campus. As of August 2018, Nakamura has undergone an incredibly comprehensive 4-month maintenance project, adding new carpet and dorm furniture in every member room as well as rebuilding the entire kitchen/basement level. The 110+ year old building has been a coop since the 50's and has cemented a tradition of bi-weekly open mic events as well as regular open/live music shows--however not currently occurring due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Nakamura has many exciting features special to the house. The porch is a wonderful place to be, right off of S State street; it has many couches and places to sit and is often a place for housemates to relax together. The TV room is another common space where there is a flatscreen TV with several gaming consoles that are free for any housemate to use, including board games and several streaming accounts such as Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, Disney+ and more! Nakamura also has a piano and a drumset for anybody to use. There are many other common spaces that often host house activities, including watch parties, movie nights on the projector, karaoke night, game night, and so much more. The spaces are also used for quiet studying as academics are taken seriously in house culture. Nakamura is also a boarding house, meaning it allows boarders to sign contracts and contribute to the approved house budget and charges as well as house culture; boarders are allowed to utilize any aspect of the house, including any and all food, kitchen use, and the use of washers and dryers. The interior of the house is covered in large-scale murals and other art forms. If you are looking for an affordable, fun place to live where you can easily make lifelong friends, Nakamura is the place for you!
