Fleetwood Diner. 1949 (from the Downtown Tour of A2 SmartTours

"This popular all-night diner was originally called the Dagwood Diner and was constructed from a kit made by the Dag-Wood Diner Company of Toledo, Ohio. It was constructed onsite by Donald Reid who opened the diner in 1949. It was built on a metal frame and covered in enameled steel panels. Reid had to petition the city to allow it to be built of steel rather than brick for a restaurant.

Renamed the Fleetwood Diner in 1971, it has been serving up classic diner fare to generations of Ann Arborites, who especially love its Hippie Hash. It has become an iconic institution, even though the enamel panels are gone, replaced by stainless steel. The Fleetwood retains much of its historic charm and patina and remains an Ann Arbor landmark."
