“Named in honor of Dr. Albert H. Wheeler and Mrs. Emma M. Wheeler, two Black Americans who devoted over 25 years in pursuit of civil rights.
Dr. Wheeler was the first Black mayor of the city of Ann Arbor, 1975-1978, and professor emeritus at the University of Michigan. Mrs. Wheeler was president of the Ann Arbor chapter of the N.A.A.C.P. for over 15 years. Dr. and Mrs. Wheeler served on may social service organizations.
The city of Ann Arbor is a better place to live because of the Wheelers.”
