PIONEER GRID SQUAD GETS NEEDED WEIGHT: For several years the Ann Arbor High football squad has been lacking in weight, especially for the line positions. But Coach Hollway is well pleased with some of his new boys reporting for practice this fall. Shown above are five of the newcomers who will give the Pioneers more beef. Coach Hollway, seated at the right, is looking over some of his best first-year prospects. Reading from left to right they are Glen Lake 185 pounds, Phil Reid 175, Don Cress, 205, Wallace Koebnick 190 and Dwight Gerstler 195.

'WHAT'LL WE DO ABOUT HANDY?': That could be the question as Pioneer Coach Hank Fonde (left) and his staff puzzle over Friday night's Ann Arbor High home opener with Bay City Handy on Wines Field. Maybe the answer will come from, left to right, Line Coach Don Dufek, End Coach and Chief Scout Frank Kline, Little Pioneer Boss Bob' Scope' Davis, Assistant Andy Anderson, or Trainer Paul Clifford.

ANN ARBOR ALL-AMERICANS HONORED: Three of Michigan's 21 All-American football players are home bred Ann Arbor boys and former stars at Ann Arbor High school. Ann Arbor is the only high school in the country that can boast of three All-American players picked on Collier's first team. The A. A. club, an organization of former Ann Arbor High letter-winners, last night arranged a gathering in their honor at the K. of C. club rooms, following the Ann Arbor high - Jackson High football game at Wines Field. Shown above are the former All-Americans. Reading from left to right they are: Ernest Allmendinger, guard, picked in 1917; Johnny Maulbetsch, halfback, selected in 1914 and Otto Pommerening, tackle, who gained All-American fame in 1928.

POINTING THE WAY: Pioneer Art Weid's right-hand index finger is still extended after his signal to Teammate Lot Fonville to "get No. 47" (Battle Creek's Emmett Brown) and thus clear the way for a 47-yard TD jaunt. Fonville really put a block on Brown and Weid moved untouched into the Bearcat end zone after a pretty run. This was Ann Arbor High's second touchdown which came early in the second period. The Pioneers added two more.

WHOA THERE! Battle Creek's hard-going Tom Gould proved a problem to the pioneers throughout the game. Here he's being stopped by Jim Dixon who caught him from behind after a seven-yard gain.

TURNER TURNS IT ON: Ann Arbor High Wingback Jim Turner hasn't always enjoyed good luck with the spinner-handoff reverse this season but he and his helpers made it work for a 50-yard touchdown run in the third period last night. Here the Pioneer halfback is just getting into full stride as Battle Creek's John Keagle makes an ineffective lunge in his direction. Turner was helped later by Garland Cobb's key block.

SOPH TO WATCH: Sturdy Sophomore Steve Lowe rates as a miler of fine promise for Tim Ryan's Pioneers. He proved it again yesterday as he turned in a smart winning effort against Jackson's experience Paul Parrish.
