Part Of Crowd That Watched Blaze: This general view of the fire which badly damaged the fourth floor of the Montgomery Ward Co.'s farm store yesterday afternoon shows firemen manning hoses from the ladder truck with part of the estimated 3,000 crowd in the foreground. The smoke billowing in the air could be seen over the entire downtown area. Firemen were hampered in their efforts by exploding sporting ammunition which went off in the heat of the blaze.

Fireman Hurt: Fireman Louis N. Jeffreys, 28, of 714 S. Fifth St., is shown just after he was struck by a water line while fighting the blaze which swept through the fourth floor of the Montgomery Ward Co.'s farm store at 140 S. First St. yesterday afternoon. Jeffreys was knocked unconscious by the line which swung out of control on the west side of the burning building.

Fight Fire From Ladders: Mounted precariously on an serial ladder many feet above Washington St., city firemen fight the fire that raced through the fourth floor of Montgomery Ward Co., farm store and warehouse building yesterday afternoon. Most of the battle had to be waged in this position, with great clouds of smoke pouring from the windows of the building into the faces of the firefighters. It took them an hour and a half to control the fire -- termed one of the most spectacular in the history of the city.

Dining Room Badly Damaged: Fire-blackened chairs are shown piled in the dining room of Hollis House, University League house badly damaged by fire last night. Firemen working from three trucks battled the blaze for two hours with high pressure fog and water last night. They succeeded in confining the blaze to the first floor of the three-story rooming house. (Story on page 13)
