Lindbergh Thrilled The World Our readers 45 or more years old can remember the excitement that accompanied Capt. Charles A. Lindbergh's flight from New York to Paris in May, 1927. The picture on Page 1 of the May 21, 1927, Ann Arbor Times News (above) was a stock shot from the newspaper's morgue. Today The News would be able to print a picture of the arrival taken the same day in Paris. This is one of a series of old front pages presented by The News during National Newpaper Week. Readers noting the "3 Cents" a copy price in the upper right corner of the page are asked not to bring it to our attention. After all, sirloin steak was selling then for 25 cents a pound and you could get your hair cut for 50 cents.

Headline Of Long Ago: As a feature of National Newspaper Week, October 9-15, The News is presenting some of its old front pages carrying news stories which made history. The May 7, 1915, edition above recalls the "Lusitania Incident" of World War I. Although the United States did not enter the war until two years later, the loss of 114 American lives in the sinking of the Lusitania by a German submarine inflamed public opinion on the side of the Allies. As noted by the headline, first reports were the no lives were lost. Other headlines show that war news had "taken over" the front pages, although it is reassuring to note that as early as half a century ago the "location of Ann Arbor" was established.

Hindenburg Horror Recalled: The horror of death in the sky perhaps never has been so well illustrated as with this picture of the German dirigible exploding above Lakehurst, N. J. This is another memory stirrer in The News' series of Front Pages From The Past -- printed in observance of National Newspaper Week. This was Page 1 ofyour May 7, 1937, issue.
