TEACHER WILL BE HONORED: Mrs. Mary D. Mitchell (right) of East Ann Arbor is pictured above at the job she has done for 30 years - teaching youngsters. Mrs. Mitchell, who teaches third and fourth grade pupils at School No. 1, Pittsfield School District No. 9, will be honored for her 30 years in the teaching profession by the PTA and the Parents' Group of the two Pittsfield District schools at a 7 o'clock banquet Thursday night in the First Methodist Church. She has taught at School No. 1 since 1930. Shown with her are (left to right) Garland J. Cobb, Rosedale Ave., a third grader; Mary Jane Godfrey, Platt Rd., who is in the fourth grade; and Alice May Nodine, Springbrook Ave., a third grader, who watch Jerry J. Orr, Springbrook Ave., as he does a division problem under Mrs. Mitchell's guidance.

ORIGINAL STONE SCHOOL IN 1911: Shortly after this picture of the old Stone School at Packard and Stone School Rds. was taken the building was torn down and the salvaged stone and wood beams (plus new supplies) were used to build the present Stone School, on the same site. All labor for razing the old building and constructing the new was done by the parents of Pittsfield School District, Fractional 7.

Three hundred East Ann Arbor residents held a joint celebration Saturday afternoon to dedicate their new $183,000 elementary school building, to honor their first school superintendent, Mary D. Mitchell, for whom the school is named, and to mark the 25th anniversary of the district's founding. A luncheon at the Michigan Union was given by the Board of Education to honor Mrs. Mitchell and all past presidents of the Pittsfield School District No. 9. Shown above are three who participated in the celebration at the school. Left to right they are former Dean James B. Edmonson of the University School of Education, Mrs. Mitchell and Raymond Sorg of the present board.
