Mary D. Mitchell, the 85-year-old former teacher, principal and superintendent of the old Pittsfield School District No. 9, visits third graders at the school named for her. The youngsters, members of Mrs. Shirley VanderLey's class at Mitchell School, are showing Mrs. Mitchell a collection of newspaper articles and other materials on old Ann Arbor. The students are, seated in the foreground, Douglas Williams, left, and John Woodall and in the background, Mike Richards and Darlene Vogel. The retired educator visited the school yesterday where she was introduced to the student body and learned of plans for the school's expansion. Mitchell School is now in the Ann Arbor School District.

Mrs. Mary D. Mitchell, 88, former teacher, principal and superintendent of the old Pittsfield School District No. 9, stands before a portrait of herself presented last night to the elementary school named for her at 3550 Pittsview Drive. The portrait was painted by local artist Jon Lockard and was presented by the Mitchell Parent-Teacher Organization to the school during an open house held last night to honor Mrs. Mitchell. Yesterday was Mary D. Mitchell Day at the school. The veteran educator retired in 1949 after 30 years in the teaching profession.
