MAY BE STATE CHAMPIONS IN ACTION: In the above picture you probably are looking at the coming state scholastic championship wrestling squad in one of its workouts. At least the Ann Arbor High grapplers shown above have high hopes of winning the state title, especially since they defeated Ottawa Hills of Grand Rapids in a recent dual meet. Ottawa Hills is the present titleholder. These Pioneer matmen will engage East Detroit High in a dual meet to be held at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon at the Ann Arbor High school. Coach Harold Nichols, former Big Ten and national champion shown at the extreme right, is coaching the Pioneer squad this season. Capt. Gilbert Caswell is shown on the mat with his arms about Edward Shannon, 115-pounder, while Coach Nichols imparts some information. Showing considerable interest are other members of the Pioneer squad. Reading from left to right they are Mike Katapol, 155-pounder (standing), Hugh Wilson, 145-pounder; Gene Mann, 155, Manager Hale 135, Ken Levy 165, Hugh Cooper 135 and Gilbert Hense, 175-pounder.

SMALL BUT PLENTY GOOD: Ed Shannon, Ann Arbor high senior shown above, was too small to play football or basketball for the Pioneers so he turned to wrestling. His efforts were rewarded over the week-end when he became the first Ann Arbor high grappler to win a national title while still in school. Ed won the crown in the 112-pound division of the National A.A.U. Junior tournament. He was coached by Harold Nichols, former Big Ten champion, while at Michigan.
