It might have been November in Ann Arbor today, except that it was the first day of school, a traditional September event. Most of the city's 5,000 public school pupils marched to school this morning well-bundled in coats and scarves against the chilly 50-degree temperature. Typical of the scenes was the one above at Mack School.

THEY JUMPED THE GUN: It was back to school for most public school pupils in Washtenaw county today, but these eighth and ninth graders at Slauson Junior High jumped the gun. Only seventh graders were required to report there today. Some of the older pupils who showed up by mistake stayed to watch the seventh graders go in. Among the spectators enjoying their extra holiday were (left to right) Bill Loy, Jack Hiser, Eugene Bolzman, Doug Kelsea, Lynn Richards, Roger Schlecht, Eddie Murphy, Johnny Goetz and John Wilson.
