A School Building Rises: This photograph shows about one-fourth of the steel framework erected on the Newport Rd. site of a $811,865 school which will house 540 elementary children in 18 classrooms when it is completed before Sept. 1, 1957. A spokesman for McComber Detroit Sales, which is erecting the steel, said the remaining framework is expected to be in place in five more working days. Footings for the school, which is near Sunset Rd. underground work and the steel are in place about six months after Architect Charles W. Lane of Ann Arbor was awarded a contract to draw plans for this school and a similar one west of the present end of Coronado Dr. in the southwest sector of the school district.

A School 'Grows': Construction work by Henry W. deKoning Construction Co. of Ann Arbor is forging "ahead of schedule" on this $811,650 Newport-Sunset Rd. elementary school, which is slated to be completed by May, 1957. With the foundation and steel beams emplaced, exterior brick work is rapidly enclosing the structure, which is "T" -shaped and 271x358 feet. The 18-classroom school will house 540 kindergarten through eight graders. The deKoning firm is also building a similar southwest school west of the end of Coronado Dr. Steel framing on this structure is expected to be up in the next few days, with completion coming by July, 1957. This latter building is said to be a month ahead of schedule. Architect Charles W. Lane of Ann Arbor headed blueprinting of the $1,622,582 worth of new grade schools.

For 1,500 Pupils: The three new elementary school buildings pictured costing a total of $2,490,197, will house up to 1,500 kindergarten through sixth graders when they open in September. The three schools were named last night by the Ann Arbor Board of Education in honor of educators who served in local public schools. The new Levi D. Wines School (top, at left) [this photo] at Newport and Sunset Rds. and the Carrie M. Dicken School (bottom, at left) west of the end of Coronado Dr. each cost about $811,000. They will be finished April 15 and June 1, respectively. The Judson G. Pattengill School (above) at Carhart Ave. and Crestland Dr. will be finished in May. It cost $867,615.

New Wines School: This $811,000, 18-classroom Wines Elementary School at Newport and Sunset Rds. is about 97 per cent complete. Just interior finishing work remains. Architect Charles W. Lane said today the structure will be finished April 15, more than two weeks ahead of the official May 1 completion date. The 12-acre school site has been finish-graded and seeded except for the area immediately adjacent to the building, Lane said. The new school, when occupied in September, will provide facilities for 600 kindergartners through sixth graders.
