Smokeeater: An Ann Arbor fireman, atop a 100-ft. aerial ladder, shoots a stream of water at the roof of the building at 113 D. Fourth Ave., after a fire broke out in the structure's elevator shaft. The dense smoke which hampered firemen throughout the blaze can be seen pouring out of windows on both sides of the building.

Toys Recovered: Members of the Ann Arbor Eastern Kiwanis Club led by Senior Parole Officer Robert Schumacher [third from left in this uncropped photo] carry toys from the Michigan Woodcraft Co. building after Saturday's fire. Hundreds of the toys to be given to needy children for Christmas in the "Project Warnhoff" program, were water-soaked in the fire.

Ann Arbor Then and Now: It Was A Street Of Carnivals ~ S. Fourth Ave. and Washington St. was a favorite site for street carnivals in the good old days of uninhibited entertainment. That was before the corner building shown at the right in both pictures was built to house a meat market. Until recent years it was the home of the Milan Beef Co., and now is occupied by Sun Cleaners. The top picture was taken about 1890; the one below [this photo] recently. At the left background is the Allenel Hotel, formerly the Cook House.
