This trio of track men, Herb Barten (left), Chuck Fonville (center) and Bob Mathias, are among the best in the world at their specialties. Barten, Michigan's great mid-distance runner, won the quarter-mile last night while Mathias, now competing for Kiski Prep, anchored a winning relay team. Fonville, this year's Michigan track captain and world record-holder in the shot put event, is sitting out this year's competition because of a back injury which kept him off the Olympic team and forced an operation from which he is recovering. Fonville is apt to return to competition for the Wolverines next year.
