Three churches have stood on the present location of St. John's Catholic Church on W. Cross St. since 1845, when a 24 by 16-foot frame structure was erected for those of the Catholic faith in the Ypsilanti area. The first services (a wedding) in the old brick building (left) were held June 23, 1858. The present church (above) and a new rectory were completed during Monsignor G. Warren Peek's eight-year tenure as pastor. (Monsignor Peek has been pastor of St. Thomas Church in Ann Arbor since leaving Ypsilanti in 1940.) The picture at left was taken about 1890, some 33 years before the structure was torn down.
