1954

Ann Arbor News, August 16, 1954
Caption:
Workmen of the Henry W. deKoning Construction Co. pour a special barium sulfate aggregate concrete, said to be the heaviest ever mixed in Michigan at 220 pounds per cubic foot, for walls of the Phoneix Memorial Building rising on the North Campus site. Normal weight is 150 pounds. The extra-heavy concrete, supplied by the Ann Arbor Construction Co., is necessary to screen out radiation hazards from atomic experimental caves to be constructed in the building. The walls will be three feet thick and the floors four feet thick, according to Architect Cornelius L. T. Gabler of Detroit.
